High school students are joining the movement.

Our High School Bigs mentoring program allows high school students to make a BIG difference in the life of an elementary school student. The program impacts the lives of two young people, instilling a sense of community involvement in teenagers.

How do you become a High School Big?

High School Bigs are 16 years or older. They need their own reliable form of transportation to travel to their mentoring site. We’ll provide the training and the Little, making a match that has a BIG impact.

Big Brothers Big Sisters often partners with students groups such as National Honors Society, Peer Assisted Learning, and Student Councils to mentor students at a nearby elementary school.

Why Go Big?

Along with the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from being a High School Big, there are several other incentives. Volunteering as a mentor is a great way to perform community service hours, which are required by many school and club curricula. Volunteering as a Big is also a great activity to put on a college application.

What do High School Bigs do?

High School Bigs do the same things as other School-Based Mentoring Bigs – they meet at the child’s school during school or after school hours. What they do is up to them. Sometimes they use school computers, head out to the playground, do some homework, or just talk.

Over the summer, High School Bigs are invited on field trips with their Littles in order to stay in touch. Check out two of our blogs for more insight into what it’s like to be a High School Big.

Their relationship promotes a positive school experience for the child that leads to good attendance, positive peer and adult relationships, a positive attitude, and academic enrichment.
