Community-Based Mentoring
Community-Based Mentoring is what most people think of when they hear about Big Brothers Big Sisters. You and your Little decide what to do on your own. You’ll pick up the child from his or her home, typically a couple of times a month for a couple of hours. You’ll talk, share experiences, and explore new interests.
What’s important is spending time, not spending money. You’re not expected to plan elaborate outings or take part in expensive activities. Little’s don’t expect that either. What’s most valuable, is your time.
Over time, Littles gain confidence in themselves, acquire new skills, and develop an enhanced capacity to care for others – all tasks that are part of maturity.
Our Bigs often say they get just as much out of their match as their Little does. Volunteers are able to act like a kid again, seeing the world through a child’s eyes.
We’ll support you too.
You won’t be alone in your match. Each match is assigned a Match Support Specialist who checks in with you, your Little, and your Little’s parent or guardian to see how things are going. They’re also always available to answer questions that may come up during your match.
