Finding a Friend for Your Child.

Big Brothers Big Sisters matches children between the age of 6 -15 with a reliable adult mentor (“Big”) who will help your child set and meet goals, stand up to peer pressure, make good choices and gain confidence. A Big is someone your child can learn from and look up to. A Big is someone who can devote special one-to-one time to your child and give encouragement and motivation to reach life goals.
Big Brothers Big Sisters has been matching children with mentors for more than 100 years across the nation. In Houston, we have been matching children from our community for almost sixty years.
Research shows that children who have an adult mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters show improvement in a number of areas.

How it works
Each Big is asked to commit to one year worth of mentoring and meet with their Little at least twice a month. The Big usually contacts the Little to arrange an outing, staying in contact with the parent or guardian.
Bigs and Littles do everyday activities together. They go to the park, go to the movies, the museum, or run errands. It’s not the activity that matters, it’s the fact that they’re spending time together.
Child Screening Process
Step 1: Attend the Parent/Guardian Training Session
- Please Bring the following pieces of information with you: A current photo of your child (for our file)
- Your child’s social security number
- Name of your child’s school
- If your child is seeing a counselor for any reason, please bring us the counselor’s name and contact information
Step 2: Once all your materials are collected, evaluated and approved, we will pre-match your child with a Big and discuss the volunteer’s details with you. With your approval of the Big a Match Evening will be set up so that you, your child and the Big can meet and set goals for the mentoring relationship.
